Kalan(Kerala Style Kalan) is the most popular and traditional dish made in Kerala especially for the Onam Festival. This delicious dish is made out of mainly yam, raw banana, coconut and yogurt. This delicious dish is one of the main dish served in Onam Sadya. If you like this Kalan, then you can also try other Sadya Recipes


  • 250 grams Yam (Senai)
  • 1 nos Raw Banana
  • 1 tsp Pepper Powder
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 2 cups Sour Curd
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Salt (adjust to your taste)


  • ½ cup Grated Coconut
  • 1 nos Green Chili
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ¼ cup Curd


  • ½ tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 3 nos Red Chili adjust to your spice level
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves


  • Wash and chop the yam and raw banana into cubes and keep it aside.
  • In a pan add the chopped vegetables along with pepper powder and turmeric powder and allow it to cook till the vegetables are soft but not so mushy.
  • Meanwhile add the grated coconut, green chilli and cumin seeds and grind it nicely. Add curd and again grind it to a smooth paste
  • Take the smooth ground paste aside. When the vegetables are fully cooked, add salt and chopped curry leaves. To this add curd and mix well and allow it to boil for 5 minutes. 
  • Then add the ground coconut paste and again stir well and when the Kalan starts to boil, switch off the flame. 
  • In a separate pan, add coconut oil. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and when the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add whole red chillies and saute it for few seconds. Finally add curry leaves and saute it for another couple of seconds and then remove the seasoned ingredients and add it to the Kalan
  • The yummy Kalan is now ready to serve!
