Payyoli Chicken Fry Recipe: Make This Malabari Chicken Snack For A Spicy Indulgence

This tasty chicken snack is from Payyoli, a small town on the Malabar Coast of Kozhikode District of Kerala

The Malabar Coast is home to some of the most beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and rich culture! With the Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other, the influences of the geography tend to make the Malabari cuisine rich with seafood. While we all know of Malabari fish biryani and Malabari fish curry, we don’t know enough about chicken-based recipes from this coastal cuisine. On our hunt for such recipes, we found a delicious chicken dish that is spicy and crunchy at the same time – Payyoli Chicken Fry! This tasty chicken snack is from Payyoli, a small town on the Malabar Coast of Kozhikode District of Kerala.

Ingredients of Payyoli Chicken Fry

  • 500 Gram Chicken, cleaned and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 1 tsp Garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Ginger, minced
  • 2 tsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder (Haldi)
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 Green Chilli, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tbsp Meat Masala
  • 3 tbsp Fresh Coconut, grated
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 3 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 100 ml Water

How to Make Payyoli Chicken Fry

1.Marinate the chicken in minced ginger and garlic, vinegar, turmeric powder, salt, meat masala powder and Kashmiri red chilli powder. Keep this for an hour.

2.Combine grated coconut and Kashmiri red chilli powder.

3.Heat coconut oil in a pan and fry the marinated chicken along with slit green chillies.

4.Add the red chilli-coconut mix and curry leaves to the semi-cooked chicken and fry it for a while.

5. Pour water and let the chicken cook till the chicken completely absorbs the water.

6.The Payyoli chicken fry is ready!
