Everything cannot be taken as granted

Whatever relation you are IN… U can’t take people for granted. Be it your parents, your children or your spouse

Everything has its own value, space and time. If you do things beyond a certain limit, it’s annoying and irritating for both ends. You should keep safe distance in any relation and cherish it till things don’t exceed a certain level.

This is a story about a mother and a teenage daughter.

The father worked for a shipping company hence, he would be most of the time on the sea. He sailed for months and months. So the mother and the daughter were the only two people who were managing things and managing themselves.

Because the man of the house was away, both ladies handled everything very accurately. Things were normal between the girl and her mother. They were not only emotionally drawn but also stood for each other in any kind of situation in life. The mother worked for a marketing company and the daughter studied in a college pursuing her degree. They bonded very well. When the girl was growing, all of a sudden small fights between the mother and her started happening. Could be the matter was trivial or perhaps some disagreement on small topics whereby both didn’t agree.

The mother as usual was sad, emotional as it was coming from her only child. Not able to figure out why she was behaving so aggressively towards her. She kept telling her girl about her behavior and aggressiveness. One day the mother decided to speak to her daughter. While she was confronting her, the girl was listening but as always she felt her mother was lecturing her..

So, what happened between them?

One of the causes of family conflicts between mothers and teens is mismatched expectations. Sometimes, parents’ expectations are simply too unrealistic. Their children never seem to be good enough for them to understand the issues. Perhaps the generation gap is way high between them.

  • Information – Something was missing, incomplete or ambiguous.
  • Environment – Something in the environment leads to the conflict.
  • Skills – People lack the appropriate skills for doing their work.
  • Values – A clash of personal values leads to conflict.

If you need to manage a conflict with your child, these tips can help things go well:

  1. Stay calm, stop what you’re doing, make eye contact, actively listen, and treat your child with respect.
  2. Let your child have their say
  3. Focus on the issue or the behavior, and avoid general statements about your child.
